Lab Safety Officers

About Lab Safety Officers

Lab safety officers are backbone of the JST. Each lab in CHEM or CEMS is required to have at least one LSO, and two for larger groups. Each LSO is recommended to serve for two years before training a new LSO for a period of at least 6 months. The job of the LSO is

  • To translate safety knowledge to their respective labs. This in no way means that the job of the LSO is to be an enforcer of all the safety rules, nor does it mean that the LSO must undertake all the safety activities in the group.

  • Act as a liaison between the JST and the research group

  • Direct lab members to the right resources for safety questions

  • When a safety issue arises, bring it to their group’s attention.

  • Partake in JST events, and then use the safety knowledge that they learn to become safety leaders amongst their peers.

Being an LSO is an excellent career development opportunity and an excellent way to get involved in the JST! Each and every LSO is the source of JST’s success, and we would not be where we are today without their invaluable contributions and efforts.
